Prof.Premvati Tewari

With her untiring effort, dedication, and discipline, she succeeded in establishing one of the eight branches of Ayurveda, that is, Kaumarabhritya (dealing with obstetrics, gynecology, neonatology, and pediatrics) at the Department of Prasutitantra, BHU. She started research and practical/clinical work in all aspects, including emergency services in the labor room, surgery for obstetric and gynecological cases, and nursery services (now developed as an independent department of Balaroga).

Prof. Premvati Tewari gave pioneering direction to theoretical, experimental, and clinical research work, giving a strong footing to this specialty nationwide.

A good academician, administrator, researcher, and prolific writer, she has supervised 53 D.Ay.Ms./M.D. Ay. and 21 Ph.Ds. Scholars; published 258 research papers in national/international journals; attended/organized/chaired sessions/delivered keynote lectures in 102 National and 8 International conferences/workshops; completed 9 research projects; delivered keynote lectures, presided over scientific sessions, and given extensive lectures, at different U.G. and P.G. Institutions of India and Nepal.

She was associated with many academic and governmental institutions of Ayurveda in the country in different capacities. She was a Member of the Governing Body, National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA), Jaipur, Rajasthan, India; a Member of Scientific Advisory Committee (S.A.C), Institute of Post Graduate Teaching and Research in Ayurveda Jamnagar, and NIA; a Member of the Governing body, Standing Finance Committee and S.A.C. of Central Council for Research in Ayurveda & Siddha (C.C.R.A.S.) New Delhi and an Expert Member of different faculties of Ayurveda in India.

She has been a member of the selection committees of the Public Service Commission and the selection committee of undergraduate and postgraduate Institutions in India and Nepal. She was a Member of the Educational Committee of Central Council of Indian Medicine; Chairperson Academic Committee, NIA; Member of Academic Committee Rashtriya Ayurveda Vidyapeeth, New Delhi; Member of the working group for research in Indian System of Medicine and Homeopathy Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India, New Delhi and Member of Core group of experts in Population Stabilization and Sustainable Developments’ Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India, New Delhi.            

Since graduating from Bundel Khand Ayurvedic College, Jhansi Dr. Premvati Tewari has received many awards. She received 16 national/international honors/awards, including “The Kashyapa Ratna Award” of National Integrated Medical Association (N.I.M.A.) in 1985. The then Prime Minister, Hon. Atal Bihari Vajpaiji, especially complimented her for the “Ayurvedeeya Prasuti Tantra Evam Stri Roga” book. She received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from BHU. in 2009 and the Lifetime Achievement Award from R.A.V., New Delhi, in 2014. The other awards received by her include the Kashyapa Ratna Award by Vaidya Hákim Parishad Jhanshi 1987; Journal of Research and Education in Indian Medicine (JREIM).

Gold Medal for best publication of the book “Ayurvediya Prasuti Tantra Evam Stri Roga” Part I—Prasuti Tantra, 1989; Sh. Shivanath Sharma Prize of Rs. 10,000/ instituted by Sh. Gyan Kalyan Trust, Delhi, for best publication in Ayurveda in 5 years for the book “Ayurvediya Prasuti Tantra Evam Stri Roga,” Parts I and II, 1991; Govt. of U.P. Award of Rs. 11,000/ for above book in 1991; Declared City Ratna by citizens of Varanasi (City Cable) 1996; Gold Medal for original contributions in Ayurveda by Academy of Ayurveda Vijayawada 1997; Ratna Sadasya (Fellow) of Rashtriya Ayurveda Vidyapitha (National Academy of Ayurveda) 1998; Ram Narayana Sharma Ayurved Anusandhana Nyasa Jhansi Award of Rs. 100,000/ for Book “Ayurvediya Prasutitantra & Stri Roga” in 1996, given in 2000.

(The money donated to BHU for one fellowship and four gold medals); Acharya Dr. C. Dwarikanath Award (Gold Medal), 2003, International Association for the study of Traditional Asian Medicine, India, 2003; Honour “Vibhuti Sammana” conferred by Kashi Vibhuti Parisad Varanasi, 2003; National Dhanvantrari Award by Cholayol Ayurvedic Health and Research Academy, Chennai, 2005; Fellow All India Sharira Research Institute Lucknow 2008; Lifetime Excellence Award by N.I.M.A. 2008; Distinguished Alumnus Award, B.H.U., 2009; Vankaya Vakyam Sammana varanasi 2012. She was a recipient of the National Dhanwantri Ayurveda Awards.
