Details of family:- Vaidya Brihaspati Dev Triguna’s father was Shri Pandit Chanan Ram and his mother was Smt. Lakshmi Devi. He had two brothers and two sisters. He married Smt. Sohana Devi, and together they had two sons and four daughters. His early education was in a village school, and he furthered his Sanskrit studies at a pathshala established by Shri Labhuram Hakim. He excelled in his studies, passed the Prag Pariksha in the first grade, and subsequently completed the Sanskrit Visharada course. His father instilled in him the fundamentals of Jyotish (astrology), and he received training in the performance of religious rituals, broadening his understanding of traditional Indian wisdom.

Educational Qualifications:- Vaidya Triguna’s journey in Ayurveda began at Ludhiana’s Ayurveda Vidyalaya, where he heeded the advice of his uncle Vaidyaraj Lauhari Ram, an esteemed alumnus of the same institution. Under the mentorship of notable teachers like Rajavaidya Pandit Gokul Chandra, Pandit Chandra Sekhar Shastri, Vaidyaraj Sudamaram, and Vaidyaraj Krishna Dutt, he gained deep insights into the fundamental principles of diagnostics and therapeutics of Ayurveda.

Rajavaidya Pandit Gokul Chandra’s pharmacy at Ludhiana introduced him to various Ayurveda formulations. Padma Bhushan Vaidya Satya Narayanan Shastri, former principal of Ayurveda College at BanarasHindu University (BHU), trained him in Nadi Pariksha (pulse diagnosis) techniques. Later, he pursued higher studies at Banwarilal Ayurveda Vidyalaya in Delhifrom 1936 to 40, focusing on Ayurveda classics and learned Dravyaguna Vijnana (Ayurvedic pharmacology) under Gurudev Sankar Dev, a renowned scholar Lateron, he returned to Ludhiana to get clinical expertise under Vaidya Gokul Chand and made significant understanding in Brihattrayi and other Ayurvedic texts.

Professional Trajectory:-

Vaidya Triguna’s unparalleled expertise in Nadi Pariksha (Ayurvedic pulse examination) has left an indelible mark on the legacy of Ayurveda in India. His clinical skills and treatment methods were highly regarded, earning him a vast reputation throughout India. Vaidya Triguna dedicated an impressive 70 years of his life to clinical practice. He made significant contributions to securing Government support for Ayurveda. Vaidya Triguna enhanced Ayurveda’s recognition and stature through his visionary initiatives. His unwavering dedication garnered support from top authorities, leading to the establishment of the Indian Systems of Medicine (ISM) department under the Ministry of Health.  As the president and founding member of the Rashtriya Ayurveda Vidyapeeth (RAV), he contributed significantly to preserving Ayurvedic knowledge through Guru Shishya Parampara during his 15years of tenure. Vaidya Triguna’s influence extended to founding the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) and establishment of Chaudhary Brahm Prakash Ayurved Charak Sansthan. As a Member of the Ayurveda Pharmacopoeia Committee and Director of Indian Medicines Pharmaceutical Corporation Limited (IMPCL) under the Government of India, he has contributed to the advancement of Ayurveda through various research initiatives. Under Vaidya Triguna’s leadership, Ayurvedic wellness centers were established globally. His international outreach extended to renowned medical schools such as Harvard, Stanford, and Yale in the USA and Europe. Through lectures on Ayurveda, he engaged with medical professionals, researchers, diplomats, and political leaders, contributing to the decision of the US government to permit the import of Ayurvedic medicine for personal use. He served as the founding president of Manav Kalyan Samiti, an association in Delhi involved in religious and social activities. He also actively participated in the Shree Indraprasthiya Vaidya Sabha, All India Ayurvedic Congress branch, and was crucial in establishing a unit for South Delhi.

Achievements:

Vaidya Triguna’s dedicated efforts were widely recognized. He was honored with India’s third and second-highest civilian awards, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, in 1992 and 2003, respectively. The Government of India has also released a Postal stamp to honor Vaidya Triguna.
