Place of Birth:- Ratan Nagar, District Churu, Rajasthan.

Details of Family:-Prof. Madhusudan Shastri was born to Shri Hanumant Prasad Shastri and Smt. Shantaben. His father was a renowned Ayurvedic scholar and Sanskrit teacher, who played a pivotal role in Ayurveda education and research. In 1951, he married Smt. Lilavati Shastri, and they had three daughters and one son. After his father’s passing in 1966, he took responsibility for his younger siblings’ education and well-being.

Educational Qualifications:- Shastri pursued his early education in Ramagadh, Rajasthan. He earned his Acharya and Shastri degrees from HR Ruia College, Rajasthan, before obtaining his Higher Proficiency in Ayurveda and Ph.D. from Gujarat Ayurved University, Jamnagar.

Professional Trajectory:-

Career in Ayurveda Education and Administration

Prof. Madhusudan Shastri began his career in 1959 at The Center for PG Studies and Research in Ayurveda (now ITRA, Jamnagar) as an Assistant Pharmacist. His academic and administrative journey included:

  • Assistant Professor (1963) in the Department of Basic Principles of Ayurveda
  • Lecturer (1968) and Reader (1969) at Gujarat Ayurved University
  • Professor and Head (1982) of the Department of Basic Principles at IPGT&RA, Jamnagar
  • Dean (1982) at IPGT&RA and Chairman of the Gujarat Ayurved University Medical Board
  • Vice Principal at Ayurved College, Bikaner, Rajasthan
  • Senate Member and Board of Study Member at Gujarat Ayurved University
  •  

After retiring in 1993, he established a private clinic at City Arcade, Jamnagar, continuing his clinic al practice.

Contributions to Ayurveda Education and Research:-

Shastri’s extensive research and teaching methodologies emphasized:

  • Integration of Ayurvedic Principles across multiple disciplines.
  • Guidance of numerous MD theses.
  • Development of Ayurvedic formulations based on classical texts and practical applications.
  • Preservation of Ayurvedic knowledge at ITRA, Jamnagar’s library.
  • Establishment of the Rajasthan Samaj Samiti and Hindi Samaj Samiti, leading to the creation of Shishu Vihar Hindi High School, Jamnagar.

Clinical Expertise:-

Prof. Madhusudan Shastri specialized in the Ayurvedic treatment of skin diseases such as leukoderma, eczema, and psoriasis. His expertise gained national recognition, including a case where he successfully treated the daughter of Jammu and Kashmir’s former Chief Minister for leukoderma.

His practice emphasized:-

  • Dietary regulations as a core aspect of treatment.
  • Avoidance of allopathic medicines, focusing strictly on Ayurveda
  • Use of external applications alongside internal medicines
  • Treatment of Amlapitta (hyperacidity) as a root cause of multiple disorders

Propagation of Ayurveda:-

  • Shastri played a major role in expanding Ayurveda through:
  • Innovative teaching methodologies integrating cross-disciplinary research
  • Encouraging students to explore new ideas beyond traditional approaches
  • Hosting students at his home for thesis work and mentoring
  • Participation in policy-making discussions to elevate Ayurveda’s status

 Awards and Achievements:-

  • Served as Chairman of the Gujarat Ayurved University Medical Board
  • Recognized for pioneering Ayurveda education and clinical excellence
  • His Ayurvedic formulations remain a valuable reference at ITRA, Jamnagar

Apart from his contributions to Ayurveda, Shastri was actively involved in:

 Principles and Ethos:-

Shastri was known for his humility, discipline, and dedication. He maintained a strong focus on ethical practice, lifelong learning, and student mentorship. Despite his battle with cancer, he continued working tirelessly for Ayurveda until his passing on 27th July 2004. His unpublished research work and private medicine stock were later donated to a trust hospital in Dwarka.
